Have you seen the TED Talk by StoryCorps Founder Dave Isay?
A number of people have sent the link to me, knowing I love a powerful story. When she sent the link, my friend Barb said, “everyone needs THIS app.”
Dave’s message in his TED talk is about the importance of storytelling. Dave is a terrific storyteller himself and he really understands how stories make a difference in the lives of the both the people who tell them AND the people who hear them. Dave says,
“You know, a lot of people talk about crying when they hear StoryCorps stories, and it’s not because they’re sad. Most of them aren’t. I think it’s because you’re hearing something authentic and pure at this moment. . .”
I, too, believe it’s the authentic, genuine moments that touch and inspire people.
One of the very best ways to learn a good story is to ask questions of someone else. To learn their story.
The nonprofit organization StoryCorps, has given 100,000 people the chance to record interviews about their lives, pass wisdom from one generation to the next, and leave a legacy for the future. It is the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered.
The work of StoryCorps causes people to record a conversation that becomes a beautifully shared story. I love the simplicity of share a powerful story in conversation. But the magic is the recording that allows the conversation and story to live on.
The StoryCorps app is a cool tool you can use to get started with your storytelling. And when you’re ready to really amp up your stories take a look at my Complete Storytelling System to help you craft powerful stories.
In the meantime, spend your coffee break watching the TED Talk. I promise it will energize and inspire you to have meaningful conversations and find amazing stories!
